Description

The Jumilla region in Spain’s southeast has garnered a stellar reputation for its old vine grapes, particularly Monsatrell and the dense, dark, concentrated wines it produces. Well we’ve managed to source one that really bolsters that reputation. Ego Bodegas was started in 2011 specifically to make outstanding wines from Jumilla’s old vines. This warm continental region gets over 3000 hours of sunshine a year which is ideal for ripening Monastrell as well as Syrah and Petit Verdot (the blend here is 70% Monastrell, 20% Syrah and 10% Petit Verdot). The vineyards lie at an altitude of over 2800 feet which creates a cooling effect that balances the ripening and lets the grapes evolve slowly with incredible nuances.The vines are 50 years old so they offer very low yields which adds to the complexity and concentration.
