Description
The Martinelli family has been growing grapes in the Russian River Valley since 1887 when Giuseppe and Luisa Martinelli moved from Tuscany to start a winery. Together, they planted a small amount of Zinfandel and Muscat Alexandria on a 60-degree slope best known today as Jackass Hill (“because only a real jackass would farm that slope”). More than a century later, this remains the steepest non-terraced vineyard in Sonoma. The winery has been handed down three generations and is now managed by Lee Sr. About 90% of grapes, they farm are sold to other Sonoma County wineries, but everything they produce under the Martinelli label is made with hands-off approach. The wines are fermented with naturally occurring yeasts and are bottled unfined and unfiltered.Winery: “Our Giuseppe & Luisa Zinfandel has aromas of strawberry, raspberry, white peach and clove. On the palate it is juicy with Bing cherry and spices, followed by a strawberry-cream finish.”Bottle750ml, corkVarietalZinfandelAlcohol~16.5%pH11 months in 33% new French oak on its gross leesRegionRussian River Valley, Sonoma, California
