92 Points, James Suckling; 92 Points, Jeb DunnuckIt’s a buy-by-the-case value, winelovers. Like Charles Smith, we kinda love this (Wines of) Substance Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s seriously drinkable. You’ll want it with Tuesday night spaghetti and meatballs, Saturday night pan-seared rib-eyes with herbed, scalloped potatoes, and everything in between. It’s going to make you want to be a woman or a man of Substance. It’s equal-opportunity delicious.James Suckling: “Currants, flowers and walnuts on the nose. Medium-bodied with a pretty core of fruit and fine tannins and a crisp finish. Lead pencil. Fresh. Compact. Delicate and delicious. Enjoy. Drink or hold.” Jul 2021Jeb Dunnuck: “Juicy blue fruits, leafy tobacco, violets, and orange blossom notes all emerge from the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Cs and it’s medium to full-bodied, has a beautifully balanced, fruit-forward style, no hard edges, and a great finish. It’s no simple fruit bomb and has notable structure, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It reminds me of a top Cru Bourgeois from Bordeaux and represents a stunning value. Drink it over the coming 7-8 years. Maturity: 2021-2028.” May 2021 Winery: “Classic Cabernet Sauvignon. Currant, blackberry, cigar box with touches of chocolate, cedar and pencil lead. Full flavored & just so damn good. Aged 12 months on lees in 50% new oak. I should raise the price. The original thought behind Wines of Substance was to be a one wine brand, with a single minded vision to produce the best value-priced Cabernet Sauvignon in America. “How do you go about this? Traditional winemaking. Natural fermentations. Barrel-aging. Plus, bottling unfiltered and unfined. In essence, making the wines in small batch winemaking integrity, but doing so on a larger scale.” The wine is black. The label definitively says, “This is Cabernet Sauvignon.” “And also, with the CS, you know who made this wine: Charles Smith.”
